SAPIOSEXUAL

Sapiosexual analogies

The curator Ileana Garza-Terán interrogates Emilie Bitauld’s work this way : "To the Cartesian motto: I know, therefore I am, follows the Sartrean: motto One sees me, therefore I am. Who am I when I am visible? Phenomenology and metaphysics (first philosophy for the purists) are in permanent tension at the center of our daily life". From representation to expression there is only one step, which Emilie Bitauld crosses by weaving analogical links between variations in the functioning of the human brain: from free drawing to MRI, from scientific research on sapiosexuality to that on addictions. In The elements of Drawing, John Ruskin writes: "One must never fear to push analogies too far. They cannot be pushed too far: they are so precise, so complete, that the longer they are extended, the more clarity, the more certainty, and the more indispensable they seem... Affection and discord, tranquility and anxiety, weakness and firmness, purity and lust, pride and modesty, and all other attitudes of the same order, with all conceivable modifications and combinations, may be represented and defined, with mathematical exactness, by combinations of lines and colours."
